Verify a certificate by scanning its QR code

The verify page reads a QR code from a phone camera or an uploaded photo, then checks the certificate against the public API.

By Ashwin Shenoy · Founder and engineer

A printed certificate usually reaches the person checking it as a photo, a scan, or a forwarded PDF. Retyping a long credential ID is the slowest way to find out whether it is real.

The verify page reads the QR code directly.

Scan or upload

Point a phone at the QR code on a printed certificate. The certificate page opens once the code is read. If the certificate is already an image or a screenshot, upload it instead; the decoder finds the QR code inside the full image, not only a cropped square.

The check

The code is decoded in the browser, then checked against the public API before the certificate is shown. A QR code that points somewhere else does not become a valid certificate.

The QR code is optional on the design. Certificates without one can still be checked from their link or certificate ID.
