Extend a certificate's expiry date

Change the validity date on an existing recipient record when a programme is extended, without issuing a new certificate.

By Ashwin Shenoy · Founder and engineer

A certificate that expires at the end of a programme is useful until the programme is extended. A renewal cycle, a late cohort, or a corrected completion date can leave a valid certificate looking lapsed.

The expiry date can be extended from the recipient's details.

How to do it

Open the certificate's Recipients tab, open the recipient, and edit their details. Change the expiry date and save. The public page reflects the new validity on the next load; the recipient keeps the same certificate ID and link.

This is a change to the existing record, not a new issue. It is the right action when the certificate is still the correct certificate and only the validity window changed.

When to reissue instead

If the certificate design changed, or the award itself is different, reissuing is the cleaner action. A design change needs a new version; an expiry change usually does not.

The distinction matters for the recipient: an extended certificate keeps the link they already shared. A reissued certificate gives them a new copy and an email.
