What Is Credential ID?
A credential ID is the unique reference for one issued credential, used to look it up, verify it, and tell it apart from every other credential the same issuer has given out.

What it's for
Names are not unique and dates aren't either. Two people called Priya Sharma can attend the same workshop on the same day, and an issuer needs to tell their certificates apart — to look one up, to correct one, to reissue one, and to answer an employer who's holding a copy and wants to know if it's real.
The credential ID is the handle for exactly one award.
How it works
A useful ID has three properties:
- Unique within the issuer, forever. Reusing one after a batch is deleted causes precisely the confusion the ID exists to prevent.
- Stable. It survives corrections. If a misspelled name is fixed, the ID doesn't change — it's the same award.
- Unguessable, if the ID appears in a URL. A sequential number tells the world how many you've issued and lets anyone walk through other people's certificates by counting.
That last point is the one most commonly got wrong. CERT-000042 in a public URL is an invitation to try CERT-000043.
Many issuers pair a long random ID for the URL with a shorter human-readable reference on the printed design, since the ID also has to be legible enough to be read out over a phone.
Where you'll see it
On the certificate design itself, usually in small type near a corner. In the verification URL. In the Verifiable Credential as the credential's id field. And in LinkedIn's Licenses & certifications, which has a Credential ID box precisely for this.
In Verifycate
Every issued certificate gets a public ID that forms its verification URL, and that ID is what the QR code encodes. It stays the same through corrections and reissues, so a certificate that's had a name fixed is still the same credential at the same address — the recipient doesn't need a new link and neither does anyone holding the old one.
The same ID is the id of the Open Badge 3.0 credential, so the page and the signed credential refer to the same award.

Common questions
- What should a certificate number look like?
- Unguessable if it's in a public URL, stable across corrections, and short enough to read aloud. Avoid sequential numbering in anything public — it leaks your volume and lets people enumerate other recipients' certificates.
- Where do I find my credential ID?
- Usually printed on the certificate itself, and always in the verification URL. On the recipient's public page it's shown alongside the issue date.
- Does the credential ID change if my name is corrected?
- It shouldn't, and in Verifycate it doesn't. It's the same award with a corrected detail, so the ID, the URL and the QR code all stay valid.
