Certificates for course creators and online courses
Turn course completion into a verifiable certificate learners can share — LMS triggers, cohorts, Open Badge 3.0, LinkedIn, and a public page.
On this page
For a course creator, the certificate is one of the artefacts learners share, and the page they link to when someone asks what they learned. It has to be accurate, automatic, and easy to post.
Verifycate issues from the completion rule the course already enforces, through an LMS trigger or a cohort import, and keeps the public page, LinkedIn action, and Open Badge data together.
This page covers the outcomes, the platform fit, the course types, the controls, and how a creator can roll it out.
What the certificate has to prove
A self-paced course cannot rely on the creator exporting a list every week. The certificate should issue when the learner meets the rule the course already enforces: all lessons, a passed assessment, a submitted project, or a minimum attendance for a live cohort.
The claim has to match the evidence. “Completed the course” is broader than “passed the final assessment”. Pick the one the course can defend.
Outcomes
| Outcome | What changes |
|---|---|
| Issuance | Certificates go out on completion, not in a weekly batch. |
| Sharing | Every learner gets a public page, QR code, and LinkedIn action. |
| Trust | Signed Open Badge 3.0 data travels with the credential. |
| Cohort clarity | Course, cohort, completion date, and skills are visible on the page. |
| Course updates | Reissue only the learners affected by a design change. |
| Name fixes | Correction Form without a reissue credit. |
How the pieces fit
| Need | Capability | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic issue | Canvas LTI 1.3, WordPress LMS plugin, API, webhooks, Zapier | A certificate when the learner completes |
| Completion claim | Attributes for course, cohort, assessment, and date | A specific record, not a generic certificate |
| Sharing | Public page, QR code, PNG/PDF, LinkedIn | A credential the learner can post |
| Portability | Signed Open Badge 3.0 data | The record travels beyond Verifycate |
| Course changes | Template versions | Targeted reissue |
| Name fixes | Correction Form | Same page, no extra credit |
Use cases
- Course certificates — cohorts and self-paced courses.
- Bootcamp certificates — capstones and demo days.
- Training certificates — programme completion and renewal.
- Webinar certificates — live and replay attendance.
- Workshop certificates — attendance and completion.
Governance
- Issue path. Canvas, WordPress LMS, API, webhooks, or Zapier.
- Brand. Your design and logo; on Pro a custom domain and email sender.
- Cohorts. Keep cohort, course version, and completion date as Attributes.
- Expiry. Usually off for a course; on when the skill needs renewal.
- Credits. One per certificate issue; corrections do not spend a credit.
The rollout path
- One course. Choose the completion rule and connect one issue path.
- One cohort. Check the public page and LinkedIn share flow.
- The catalogue. Reuse the design and completion pattern across courses.
What changes
| Old approach | Friction | With Verifycate |
|---|---|---|
| A design file plus a manual export | Certificates arrive late | Completion trigger or import |
| PDFs inside the course platform | Learners cannot share or verify | Public page and LinkedIn action |
| A generic completion certificate | No course or skill context | Course and assessment Attributes |
| A full reissue after a redesign | Cost and duplicate pages | Template versions |
| Support inbox for name fixes | The creator reissues files | Correction Form |

Common questions
- Can certificates issue automatically after a course?
- The WordPress LMS plugin can issue on course, lesson, or quiz completion. Canvas LTI issues from a module item the learner opens. The API, webhooks, or Zapier can automate from your own completion data.
- Can learners add the certificate to LinkedIn?
- Yes. The public page has an Add to LinkedIn action, and the certificate carries signed Open Badge 3.0 data.
- What happens if the course changes?
- Template versions track which learners hold an earlier design. Reissue only the affected learners.
- Do you host the course?
- No. Verifycate handles the credential after completion; your course platform handles lessons and assessments.
